A Stubborn Wart or Verruca Rarely Clears With Home Freezing Alone

A raised rough bump on a finger, knuckle or sole will not shift. Pharmacy freeze kits leave a blister and the same lump returns. You stop picking at it, then it catches on something again.

Many of those bumps are warts or verrucas: viral skin growths, not dry skin and not a soft skin tag. At Beautoxology, cryotherapy can treat confirmed warts and verrucas after assessment. Home freezing often under-doses the lesion; clinic treatment is planned around size, site and how the skin responds.

Wart or verruca versus other bumps

  • Wart: firm, rough, raised growth, often on hands or around nails

  • Verruca: the same family of growth on the sole of the foot; may feel painful when you walk

  • Skin tags: soft flaps that catch on jewellery; see skin tags that will not rub off

  • Milia: hard white bumps that will not squeeze; see tiny white bumps and milia

  • Flat brown sun spots: pigment, not a raised wart; different treatment conversation

  • Changing, bleeding or irregular moles: medical review first, not a cosmetic freeze appointment

Why home kits stall

Over-the-counter freezes are mild by design. Thick or long-standing warts often need a stronger, controlled freeze and a review if the root returns. Cutting or picking at home risks scarring and spreading the virus to nearby skin.

  • Best when the bump is stable, clearly wart-like, and has failed gentle home care

  • Feet and periungual areas need careful aftercare so walking and nail beds stay comfortable

  • Several lesions can be planned across visits when that is safer than treating everything at once

  • Assessment separates treatable warts from lesions that need a different pathway

What clinic cryotherapy involves

After assessment, targeted cold treatment can destroy confirmed wart tissue. The area often blisters or forms a crust briefly, then settles as the treated surface recovers. Aftercare keeps the site clean while new skin forms underneath.

  • Not the same appointment as skin-tag or milia removal, even though the device family is similar

  • Not a substitute for GP review if the lesion is painful, spreading fast, or looks atypical

  • Review if a mark behaves differently after healing or if new spots appear nearby

  • Verrucas on weight-bearing skin may need padding advice and a paced return to normal footwear
