What a PRP Facial Actually Does (and Who It Suits)

Search for a vampire facial and you will find glossy before-and-after photos, celebrity name drops, and very little plain English about what is actually being injected. PRP (platelet rich plasma) is the clinical name. It uses your own blood, processed to concentrate growth factors, then applied to skin that needs repair rather than a quick surface glow.

If you are comparing options across Birmingham, the West Midlands or the Cotswolds, it helps to know what PRP can change, what it cannot, and how it differs from microneedling, peels or injectable skin boosters on their own.

What PRP is

Platelet rich plasma treatment starts with a small blood sample, similar to a routine blood test. The sample is spun in a centrifuge to separate platelet-rich plasma from red cells. That plasma contains growth factors your body already uses for healing. When applied to prepared skin, the aim is to accelerate collagen remodelling, improve texture and support recovery after controlled injury.

That is why PRP is often paired with microneedling or used as a focused facial rejuvenation appointment. The plasma is yours, which appeals to people who want autologous treatment rather than a synthetic product.

What a PRP facial can help with

PRP is a strong conversation when the main issue is skin quality and repair, not lost volume or muscle movement. Patients often ask about it for:

  • Dull, tired looking skin that has not responded to skincare alone

  • Uneven texture, enlarged pores and early fine lines

  • Acne scarring and shallow scars where collagen support has been disrupted

  • Post-inflammatory marks and skin that feels fragile after sun or stress

  • Boosting results when combined with microneedling in a planned course

Results build gradually over weeks as collagen remodelling continues. One session can brighten and smooth; a course spaced sensibly often makes more sense for scarring or deeper texture concerns.

What PRP cannot do

PRP will not replace dermal filler where cheeks, temples or lips have lost structure. It will not soften a strong frown line the way muscle relaxants do. It is not a substitute for removing a distinct fat pad under the chin or treating thread veins, which need a different plan entirely.

If congestion and blackheads dominate, a HydraFacial or skin treatment pathway may suit you better. If tone and pigmentation are the priority, a chemical peel or medical skincare review could be more direct. Honest triage matters more than booking the trendiest name on Instagram.

What treatment and recovery feel like

After consent and a brief blood draw, the plasma is prepared while your skin is cleansed and numbed if needed. Application is usually combined with microneedling or mesotherapy-style delivery so the growth factors reach the dermis rather than sitting on the surface. The appointment takes around an hour in Phorest for our PRP platelet rich plasma treatment.

Expect redness similar to a moderate facial for one to three days. Most people return to normal routines quickly, with strict SPF, gentle cleansing and the aftercare we give you in clinic. We will also screen suitability: blood disorders, active infection, pregnancy, certain medications and recent illness can mean PRP is not appropriate.

PRP versus microneedling alone

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger collagen on their own. Adding PRP is sometimes described as giving that repair response a concentrated boost from your own growth factors. It is not automatically better for everyone: mild texture concerns may not need the extra step. Deeper scarring or skin that heals slowly often benefits from the combination. Our microneedling guide explains what needling alone can achieve if you want to compare before booking.
